Shaft Diameter Calculator

Calculate the minimum shaft diameter required to transmit a given torque based on allowable shear stress.

  • check_circleMinimum Diameter: Based on pure torsion loading.
  • check_circleRecommended Diameter: With safety factor included.
  • check_circleShear Stress: Based on material allowable stress.

school Theory & Formulas

Shaft Diameter Formula:

Minimum Diameter:
d = ∛(16T / πτ)

Where:
- d = Shaft diameter
- T = Applied torque
- τ = Allowable shear stress

Allowable Shear Stress (typical):
- Mild Steel: 40-55 MPa
- Alloy Steel: 55-75 MPa
- Stainless Steel: 45-60 MPa

Safety Factors:
- Normal loading: 1.5-2.0
- Shock loading: 2.0-3.0
- Reversing loads: 2.5-4.0
